All crews taking part in the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge are invited to submit entries into the annual Sail Training International photographic competition. There are two categories: Trainees at Work on Deck, and Trainees Having Fun. All shortlisted entries will appear on the Sail Training International picture gallery, www.sailtraininginternational.org, and the winning entries will receive prizes. Entry forms, including full terms and conditions, can be downloaded here (tsac-photo-entry2) and must accompany all entries. The closing date is 31 August 2009.

This year Sail Training International is also running a film competition. Any crew member who takes a short film which they wish to enter into the competition, should be uploaded onto www.Youtube.com, and the link sent to corinne.hitching@sailtraininginternational.org. There is no category for the films but all those that are deemed to show the fun, excitement and challenge of taking part in a Tall Ships event, will be added to Sail Training International’s own film channel, with a winner a runner up awarded prizes.

The Great Adventure!

The Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge 2009 is a spectacular odyssey around the North Atlantic Ocean of more than 7,000 nautical miles following the traditional route taken by sailing ships of a by-gone age.

The event starts at the end of April and concludes in August 2009. A fleet of Tall Ships will compete in each leg of the race which is open to any monohull sailing vessel that complies with the Sail Training International Racing and Sailing Rules and Special Regulations.

Anyone with a sense of adventure can sign up to take part as a trainee crew member in any of the race legs for an experience of a lifetime!

Sailing in the Challenge will be exciting and competitive … and host ports in mainland Spain, the Canary Islands, Bermuda, the US, Canada and Northern Ireland are preparing a fabulous welcome for the fleet and trainee crews.

The Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge 2009 will be the sixth time the Tall Ships have raced around the North Atlantic. Previous races took place in 1964, 1976, 1984, 1992 and 2000. Each time, thousands of people experienced something they will never forget and became part of history.

No engines, just the wind, nature and you!

On board the crews will experience the highs and lows of racing across the Atlantic… when the wind drops, when a pod of dolphins join you as you sail on… when all you can see are the stars. Each day they get to hear their race position in the fleet from race control, which can act as a spur to make them and their watch determined to work harder to get the very best out of their vessel and improve their placing.

Friends and family at home will be able to watch progress via the fleet tracking on the website and be with the crews as they read the blogs!

Arrival in port is always warm with thousands of people expected in each port where they will line the quays as the ships sail into the harbour.

During the port days, the crews will get to experience an unforgettable Crew Parade when they parade through the streets, making as much noise as possible! It’s the tradition! They will also take part in a Crew Party and enjoy some wonderful cultural trips to the areas around the port so can get to see some of the country too. Leaving port the vessels will take part in a Parade of Sail surrounded by hundreds of little pleasure boats. It’s a sight to behold!

The crews will make friends for time and have memories that will last a lifetime.

Have you got the bottle? If so, we have the ships!

The term Tall Ship covers many kinds of sailing vessel, from the big square-riggers to small modern yachts. What kind of vessel would you like to sail on? The big square-riggers offer the chance to climb up the masts and out on the yards; an exhilarating experience of a lifetime. On other vessels you will be part of a smaller team which often brings the opportunity of getting involved in all aspects of running the vessel from sail handling to navigation. Being an essential part of a small team is very rewarding!

You will have a great experience whichever kind of ship you join. Which one is for you?

You can contact individual ships – click on any of the pictures below for a direct link to their websites. For general information and advice, contact the race organisers:

Sailing on a Tall Ship can be an adventure of a lifetime. It does not matter if you have never been on a boat or a sailing ship before, sail training vessels welcome novices as well as experienced sailors.

You’ll make new friends, experience working in a team, discover problem-solving skills you thought you never had, and perhaps even muscles, as well as experiencing the power and beauty of Tall Ships and the sea.

Anyone with an adventurous spirit should consider taking part in a Tall Ships Race. Even landlubbers with no prior experience of being at sea can experience the sheer exhilaration of crewing a Tall Ship. Billowing white sails, the wind in your hair, salty air, the creek of rigging and the thrill of competition all combine to make taking part in these events an unforgettable experience. It’s real life Pirates of the Caribbean.

Watch the following film to get a feel for what it would be like to take part in this adventure:
