Who Can Take Part
The Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge 2009 will be a wonderful experience for anyone with a spirit of adventure, a love of the sea, a desire to visit new places and different cultures, but mostly for those who are looking for a challenge!
No sailing experience is necessary as all the vessels taking part welcome novices as well as experienced sailors. Participants become ‘trainee’ crew members and work with the professional crew to sail the vessel, including navigating, safety, manoeuvring, helming and hauling those ropes!
Trainees can be any age from 15 upwards although a high number of the participating trainee crews will be aged 15-25. People in their 70s and 80s often take part in Tall Ships events and have enjoyed the experience, while hundreds of thousands of young people have found hidden talents and confidence that comes from working as a team against the temperamental and unpredictable seas.
